In those days, the nation was weary. The markets bustled but the people’s hearts were empty. Their hands were full of small things, yet their spirits were hollow. They had roofs above their heads, but no shelter for their hopes.
They had bread upon their tables, yet no story to bind them together. And the elders whispered to their children: “Once, long ago, we were mighty. Once, we walked in greatness. But now we stumble.” So the people cried out in the squares and in the taverns, saying, “Who shall deliver us? Who shall lift us again above the nations? Who will make us great once more?”
And behold, a man rose among them.
